Where the San Juan range meets the high desert of the Colorado plateau, anything can happen. Swords of yucca leaves protrude from the snow, next to stately firs and pinon pines. A splash of columbine before a backdrop of ghostly sage. The Durango area is some of the wildest in the lower 48. It abuts the Weminuche Wilderness, which at half a million acres is Colorado's largest. But you won't need to backpack in to see nature's wonders. They're right outside your doorstep, and on view through the floor-to-ceiling south-facing windows. Keep an eye out for the family of wild turkeys that likes to parade past the windows in the morning.

Whether you fish or hike, ski or snowmobile, you'll no doubt come to Durango prepared for the stunning beauty and endless diversions of the San Juan Mountains that surround it. What you might not expect, however, are the many delights of its hip and historic downtown. No mere mountain town, Durango boasts world-class cuisine, artisan breweries, craft cocktails, a lively music and arts scene, spas and eclectic shopping. It's even got Uber service, so you can wander around freely by day and get home safely at night.
